DIY Lavender Bath Soak: A Botanical Sachet for a Simple Home Bath
A lavender bath does not need a jar of essential-oil-coated salt. For a simple botanical version, keep the flowers in a suitable bath sachet and use an unscented salt base separately. The aroma will be subtler than a fragranced finished product, and cleanup is easier when the buds stay contained.
What You Need
- Unscented bath-grade Dead Sea salt or Epsom salt, measured according to its bath directions
- 1 tablespoon dried lavender buds suitable for the intended bath use
- A securely closing bath sachet with a weave fine enough to contain the buds
- A clean towel and a comfortably warm bath
Choose unscented Dead Sea salt or unscented Epsom salt for the base. Use only materials you know are suitable for you; botanical ingredients can cause reactions, and dried flowers are optional rather than necessary for a good soak.
Prepare the Botanical Sachet
- Check the bag for loose stitching and make sure it closes securely.
- Place the dried lavender inside, leaving room for water to circulate.
- Measure the salt separately according to the product’s directions.
- Add the salt to the bath and let the crystals dissolve.
- Wet the sachet in the bathwater. Do not empty the loose buds into the tub.
- Remove the sachet after use, discard the wet botanicals and clean and dry the bag and tub.
Make the sachet for one bath. Wet flowers are not a reusable, shelf-stable ingredient. If the bag opens or sheds material, remove it and clear the tub before draining.
Why This Recipe Leaves Out Essential Oil
Dry lavender buds and concentrated lavender essential oil are different ingredients. Salt does not disperse essential oil in bathwater, and leaving a jar to “cure” does not make the oil dissolve. A carrier oil also remains separate from water.
For a scented salt product, use a complete formulation with appropriate oil limits and a compatible dispersing system. Our guide to essential oils, dilution and bathwater dispersion explains the distinction. Do not add oil to this sachet recipe to increase its aroma.

Keep the Routine Comfortable
A mild lavender aroma may suit an evening routine, but this bath should not be described as a treatment for insomnia or muscle pain. Choose comfortably warm water, stop if irritation occurs and avoid applying salt to broken or inflamed skin. For a simpler bath or known botanical sensitivity, omit the sachet and use the unscented salt alone as directed.
